New Homes for Books &Magazines

How is the book shelf organizing going?  Are you ready to donate or trade those books now?

Most places have organizations or facilities that accept books and magazines.  You’ll be adding enjoyment to the life of others and recycling at the same time.

Books and magazines can be donated to the following places:

  • LOCAL LIBRARIES     The Elko County Library accepts used books,DVDs,and VHS tapes.  Any books or media that the library is unable to use, are sold in the semi-annual book sale that helps to support the library.  The library also has a magazine exchange rack in the foyer.  You can drop off your magazines and pickup others you want to read.
  • THRIFT SHOPS   Most places have thrift stores. Just look online for your area.   In the northeastern Nevada area Easter Seals,  Ruby Mountain Resources and Fish accept books.  Proceeds from the sale of donated items help those in need.
  • BOYS &GIRLS CLUBS    Magazines can often be used for craft projects.  Children’s books are welcomed.  The Boys and Girls Club in Elko is located at Southside School.  Give them a call.
  • LOCAL SCHOOLS    Many times the local schools use magazines for projects.  Contact the schools in your area.
  • ADULT CARE FACILITIES     Books and magazines are greatly appreciated by the clients at these facilities.  Try Highland Manor or Beehive Homes in Elko or Wells.  Also one of my favorite places is Bright Path Adult Enrichment.  This amazing group provides day care for adults in need.
  • HOSPITLALS    Check with the hospital in your area.   Our local hospital, Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, gladly accepts magazines.    Just drop them off at the front desk.

If you would like to sell or  trade your books there are Used Bookstores in most of the larger cities.  Check them out.

Here in Elko we have a great family owned and operated store called “THE BOOKSTORE”.  Tammy has a wonderful selection of new  books for adults and children.  She also is very willing to order  books for you.  This store has a large room dedicated to used  books.   You bring in your used books for trade and receive a credit for those books.  Credits are used to trade for books from the used book room.   You only pay 25 cents per book  handling fee.   It ’s lots of fun to visit and I have yet to come home without a new (to me) book or two.

As I said before,I love books.  But there are times when there just isn’t any more room left in the house.  If  I donate or trade books and purge magazines it allows me to read great new things without being overwhelmed by the piles.

Take advantage of the joy of reading and pass that joy along to others by donating or trading your books and magazines.

Books,Books and More Books . . .

Shelves Are Full

I love books.

I have books in every room of the house.  I have books in piles to read before winter ends.  I have books from childhood and professional books and coffee table books and kids books and . . . well you get the picture.  I just love books!!    If you are like me,you always have an adventure waiting if you have a good book to read.

Recently I realized that books and people are quite similar.  Some are life-long friends, some are friends for a season and some are mere acquaintances.  All of them have added to my life.

Life-Long Friends

Any way,I decided I should treat my “Book Friends”a little better.  I went to work organizing and dusting the books.  The dusting went well, then I tried to organize the books by genre and place them together on shelves.   The shelves filled and I still had books without homes.  What to do?

That’s where the “Book Friends Theory”kicked in.  It was time for me to let the mere acquaintances and friends for a season books move along and befriend someone else.   Into a donation bag went the paperback spy novels,  outdated kitchen design books, books I would never read again and books I planned to read but never will.

Room for New Books

Amazing . . . I really like the open space.  It gives the shelves a sense of organization.  I can see the books I want and all the books are grouped by categories. This makes it very easy to find any book I am looking for.   Best of all this project only took about 90 minutes on a stormy afternoon.

Try organizing your books.  It’s an easy project and a quick way to gain some shelf space.

Check out my blog  next week.  I have some great places to donate those books or magazines you need to purge.
